Architecture + Process: Designing
Not too long ago, we shared a few preliminary sketches for a residential renovation and addition here in Orange County; the design process is moving along smoothly, and we're excited to share a few updated renderings of the new home.
The addition and remodel incorporates a contemporary sensibility with a modern floor plan, open to the expansive yard beyond and featuring a dual-sided, interior and exterior fireplace of board-formed concrete.
The existing home has a very traditional architectural style, providing a unique opportunity to bring the two very different aesthetics together in a balanced and functional way.
Though the materials and detailing proposed are more minimalist and streamlined, with metal and cedar siding, bi-folding door systems, and steel-clad posts, the general massing and proportions, as they relate to the current structure, are critically important. To maintain appropriate relationships between old and new, two rectangular masses anchor the overall feel of the elevation, while creating a sense of enclosure with more dynamic and usable spaces.
Consideration of the human scale, as well as client and context-specific elements were key drivers of the new floor plan, which is reflective of the quintessential California lifestyle. The design highlights a strong connection to the outdoors, with gathering spaces that allow the homeowners, friends and family to enjoy the beautiful property and landscape from both inside the home and from the exterior.
The key transitional design elements will continue to be refined as we move forward through design development and towards the construction documents phase of the process.
So, more on that soon, as well as a look at the space from inside, with interior renderings to come shortly. Until then, keep an eye out for a couple new projects at our design portfolio page, and thanks for reading!
