Contemporary Construction + Cedar Siding
Construction at MYD's Villa Park project, featuring an expansion as well as a complete renovation of the interior and the majority of the exterior of the home, is nearing completion...
These images highlight progress at the exterior- the dark stain at the western red cedar siding brings the material to life and underscores the new contemporary aesthetic of the home.
At the master bedroom extension, strong geometric forms encompass the new square footage to create a private patio with direct access to and a strong connection with the outside.
This specific type of cedar is STK or 'select tight knot', meaning there are naturally occurring knots and burls of fairly uniform distribution. By specifying a dark stain, those inconsistencies are less apparent, making the material a relatively cost-effective option that still achieves the desired appearance.
It also gives a sense of subtle movement, and the natural qualities of the wood soften the orthogonal shapes and strong massing of the rectilinear building forms.
The custom door and window assembly allows for ample natural light and floor to ceiling views of the landscape beyond (as seen in the photo below), while the cantilever above provides shade and protection from direct heat gain.
This, along with the other window systems replaced or added throughout the project, is a dark bronze aluminum that complements the exterior building materials, including the dark siding and smooth stucco.
The windows have been located to maximize natural light while maintaining privacy at the shower room, a fully-tiled wet area for a floating tub and custom shower. Additional light enters through a new skylight, creating a bright, yet private sanctuary.
The emphasis on clean lines, open space and daylight continues throughout the interior, where a large great room with a sloping ceiling opens to the landscape with bifolding doors.
We'll be sharing images of these spaces and other interior design details in the coming weeks...
