'The Modern Chair' at Palm Springs Architecture and Design Center
Museum Visit Snapshots: An exhibition of modern chairs presented by the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center was recently on display at the Edwards Harris Pavilion in downtown Palm Springs, and we had the chance to see the collection just before it closed earlier this month.
Here are a few photos from our visit…
More than fifty pieces represent works from the early 20th century to the current era, making for a beautifully curated display in the context of the building’s minimalist mid-century interior.
The Modern Chair traces the evolution from the first cantilevered example by Mart Scam, and then onward toward to designs including examples by Cini Boeri, Charles and Ray Eames, Frank Gehry, Eileen Gray, George Nakashima, Charlotte Perriand, Rudolph Schindler, among many others. [psmuseum.org]
A favorite destination that reflects the history and legacy of Palm Springs and Southern California modernism, this unique gallery was originally designed by E. Stewart Williams in 1961 as a savings and loan and transformed into a exhibition space by the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2011.
