Design Development + New Elevations
For any new home or major renovation, the floor and roof plans are developed with consideration of the elevation design, interior volumes and exterior massing.
For this addition and remodel in Sierra Madre, we took a look at the floor plan design process a few weeks back. The following sketches provide a glimpse into the development of the exterior design and front elevation and the exploration of potential opportunities in terms of form, massing, views and light.
The overall concept at the streetscape seeks to redefine both vehicular and pedestrian access, allowing for expanded exterior living space at the front and sideyards, minimized paved surfaces and increased landscaping.
Both schematic options utilize simple roof forms to create vaulted ceilings and clerestory windows, while maintaining clean architectural lines that allow for efficient material use and straightforward construction technologies.
The modern ranch aesthetic reflects a scale, material palette and exterior detailing appropriate to the project site, located in the foothills just outside Los Angeles.
