MYD Photo Album: OCMA by Morphosis
The Orange County Museum of Art recently opened, and we took the opportunity to visit and explore the contemporary civic building by Thom Mayne of Morphosis.
Located in the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, the curves and angles of the structure’s exterior add a new dynamic aesthetic to the complex, sitting adjacent to the undulating glass facade of Cesar Pelli’s Concert Hall and the original Segerstrom Hall and directly facing Richard Serra’s 66 foot tall steel installation, Connector.
The sculptural nature of the architecture activates the existing plaza, and an expansive new upper level terrace allows for various events and installations, providing additional flexible outdoor space for public use.
A unique and complicated design, the facade is clad in white terracotta tiles that visually balance the large planes of glazing. The material is also utilized at the interior, incorporated alongside glass partition walls and translucent floors at the overlapping bridges that occupy the upper space of the entry atrium.
The project has been one of the most anticipated buildings in the area, and its completion links the other primary building elements of the Segerstrom Campus- a number of venues for music and theater- into a cultural destination that celebrates community, design and the arts in Orange County.
